HR Generalist
Reports To: General Manager
Department: Administrative Team
Location: Virginia (remote, with occasional travel to job sites/regional meetings)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Position Summary
The HR Generalist is responsible for the day-to-day human resources operations supporting a workforce of approximately 50 employees, including field technicians, regional project managers, and an administrative team. This role partners closely with the General Manager and regional Project Managers to ensure the company recruits, hires, onboards, and retains qualified talent, stays compliant with federal and state employment law, and maintains all required state licensing — including Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) licensing for applicable roles. The HR Generalist serves as a hands-on, responsive resource for managers and employees, providing real-time support for workplace issues as they arise. This role also performs other duties as assigned that are consistent with or adjacent to the responsibilities of an HR professional, including tasks not specifically outlined in this position description.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruitment & Hiring
- Manage full-cycle recruitment for field technicians, project managers, and admin staff, including posting jobs, screening candidates, coordinating interviews, and extending offers.
- Partner with Project Managers to understand staffing needs and hiring timelines across regions
- Conduct or coordinate background checks and other pre-employment requirements.
- Maintain a pipeline of qualified employee candidates for ongoing and future hiring needs.
Onboarding
- Coordinate new hire onboarding, including paperwork, payroll system enrollment, benefits enrollment, orientation, and introduction to company policies and safety expectations.
- Align resources for employees including phone, laptop, and systems enrollments to ensure a ready-to-work setup
- Ensure all new hire documentation (I-9, tax forms, employment agreements) is completed accurately and on time.
- Track and confirm completion of required onboarding steps, including DCJS registration where applicable.
Compliance & Licensing
- Maintain records for compliance reporting with DCJS licensing requirements for employees and the company, including initial applications, renewals, and recordkeeping.
- Track individual employee license and certification expiration dates and proactively coordinate renewals.
- Stay current on Virginia and federal employment law (wage and hour, safety, EEO, leave laws, etc.) and update policies/practices as needed.
- Maintain accurate, audit-ready personnel files and HR records.
Reporting
- Prepare and maintain routine HR reports for the General Manager (headcount, turnover, licensing status, etc.).
- Support recordkeeping and reporting required by regulatory agencies (e.g., DCJS reporting, certified payroll reporting support).
- Employee Relations & Manager Support
- Serve as a first point of contact for managers and employees on HR-related questions, policy interpretation, and workplace concerns.
- Provide in-the-moment guidance to Regional Project Managers on employee performance, conduct, and disciplinary matters.
- Support conflict resolution and help managers navigate difficult conversations with employees.
Emergent & Field Situations
- Respond to urgent HR matters arising from field operations (e.g., workplace incidents, safety concerns, employee conduct issues) with timely, practical guidance.
- Coordinate with the General Manager on incident investigations, documentation, and follow-up actions.
- Be available to support managers during time-sensitive personnel situations, which may occasionally fall outside standard business hours.
- Provide support to employees and managers in all workers' compensation matters, including reporting workplace injuries, coordinating claims, facilitating ----communication with insurance carriers and medical providers, monitoring claim status, supporting return-to-work efforts, and ensuring compliance with applicable policies and regulations.
General HR Administration
- Administer employee benefits enrollment and serve as a liaison with benefits providers.
- Support performance management processes, including reviews and improvement plans.
- Assist with policy development and updates to the employee handbook.
- Perform other HR and administrative duties as assigned by the General Manager.
Requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years of experience in an HR Generalist or similar HR role.
-Working knowledge of Virginia and federal employment law.
-Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and licensing/compliance deadlines.
-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust with field employees and managers.
-Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
-Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Teams, and HRIS/payroll systems.
-Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally within Virginia to job sites or meetings
Preferred
-Experience working in the construction, electrical, low voltage, security, or trades industry.
-Familiarity with Virginia DCJS licensing requirements and processes.
-PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar HR certification.
-Experience supporting a geographically dispersed or field-based workforce.
Working Conditions
Primarily remote office-based with occasional travel to job sites/meetings across Virginia.
May require availability outside standard business hours to respond to urgent employee relations or safety matters.
About This Role
This position is a key part of the internal administrative team and reports directly to the General Manager. The HR Generalist plays a critical role in supporting a growing, field-based workforce by ensuring the company hires well, stays compliant, and gives managers and employees the day-to-day support they need to succeed.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $110,000.00 annually
- Quarterly Bonus Plan: In addition to your base salary, Acme Technical Group provides a generous quarterly bonus program. The bonus is reviewed and calculated four (4) times per year and is based on the company's overall quarterly revenue performance.

Holidays and Paid Time Off (PTO)
Full-time employees are eligible for ten (10) paid holidays each calendar year, including:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day (plus one additional day, typically the preceding Friday)
- Independence Day (plus one additional day, date to be determined annually)
- Labor Day (plus one additional day, typically the preceding Friday)
- Thanksgiving Day
- Day After Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
At its discretion, Acme Technical Group may designate additional paid holidays or paid days off throughout the year.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
Full-time employees accrue paid time off each pay period based on the following schedule:
- 0–5 years of service: 10 days annually
- After 5 years of service: 15 days annually
- After 15 years of service: 20 days annually
PTO accrues throughout the year and is administered in accordance with company policy.
Health Insurance
Acme Technical Group offers a comprehensive medical insurance plan for eligible employees and their eligible dependents.
- For all eligible employees, the company pays 100% of the employee's medical insurance premium.
- Managers: As part of the management compensation package, Acme Technical Group also pays 100% of the medical insurance premiums for eligible family and dependent coverage, providing comprehensive medical coverage for both the employee and their eligible dependents at no cost to the manager.
Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)
To further support employee healthcare expenses, A-Tech provides a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) for eligible full-time employees.
The HRA reimburses up to $5,000 per calendar year for qualified medical expenses incurred by the employee and eligible family members covered under the company's health insurance plan.
Eligible expenses are determined in accordance with IRS regulations and the company's HRA plan documents and commonly include medical, dental, vision, and other qualified healthcare expenses.
Part-time employees are not eligible to participate in the HRA program.
Company-Paid Training
Acme Technical Group is committed to the professional development of its employees.
Subject to management approval, the company will:
- Pay for approved job-related training courses and certification fees.
- Compensate employees for time spent attending approved training.
- Reimburse approved travel and related expenses associated with training.

401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
Eligible employees may participate in the company's 401(k) retirement savings plan, which includes a competitive employer matching contribution.
The current company match is:
- 100% match on employee contributions up to 3% of eligible compensation.
- An additional 0.5% company contribution when the employee contributes 4%.
- An additional 0.5% company contribution when the employee contributes 5%.
Employees who contribute 5% of eligible compensation receive the maximum company contribution of 4% of eligible compensation.
